Anjelica and I have been friends since we met backstage at a Saturday Night Live performance in 1976. John Belushi had passed out on the floor and we had to step over him in order to talk. She was the girlfriend of Jack Nicholson at the time, but wanted to break away from that role and become known as an actress in her own right. When I moved to California we became closer and eventually did a two-hander play together in a seedy downtown Los Angeles theatre, prior to her big break in the film ‘Prizzi’s Honour’. This photograph of her was taken probably in about 1983 and I love her ability to look so sophisticated and elegant, yet windswept, in a rope of pearls on a beach.
